Most of us assume that sleeping is something that comes naturally, not something you have to work on consciously. But, you have to remember that there is a big difference between sleeping and sleeping well.

What do I mean by sleeping well? Very simple – the quality of sleep can make all the difference to how much you benefit from it. When you are young and doing little else but playing and running around all day, you will naturally sleep like a log every night. But as adults, sleeping is something we have to work at. Mainly because of all the bad habits that we have picked up over the years

Super: Your phone is your No1 enemy

What most people don’t realize is the effect that simple device has on our sleeping habits. Apart from constantly keeping up to check that one last message, the real problem with taking our phone to bed is the blue light it emits. This fools our brain into thinking it is still day – and it interferes with the sleep hormone melatonin from being released from our pineal gland in the brain, which prevents us from going to sleep the way we should. Put your phone away at least an hour before bedtime – and don’t use it for at least half an hour after getting up

Super: Develop bedtime behaviors

Try to go to bed at a fixed time – so that your body’s clock will get conditioned. Keep the bedroom as dark as possible. Avoid alcohol – it may help you go to sleep, but it will wake you up in the middle of the night. Eat at least three hours before bedtime. Once you start to do these for a few days, it will all become a routine habit.

Super: Don’t take your work to bed

Your bedtime is a time to switch off the day and just let yourself relax. Don’t fret over unfinished tasks or worry about what you have to do the next day – the better you sleep, the better you will work during the day.
